What is Vaginal Surgery?
Vaginal surgery is surgery that is performed through the vagina. Only gynecological surgeons are trained in doing this type of surgery. Most of these surgeries can be done under spinal anaesthesia avoiding the need for general anaesthesia and is often done as day care.
Procedures that can be performed by vaginal surgery
- Hysterectomy (with or without prolapse)
- Prolapse surgery- Repair of descent of bladder (Cystocele) or rectum (Rectocele)
- Vault Prolapse- sacrospinous fixation, Uterosacral ligament fixation
- Colpocleisis
- Urinary Incontinence surgery (TOT, TVT, Sling Surgery), Vesico-vagina fistula
- Vaginal Cysts
- Vaginoplasty (girls born with absent vagina)
- Recto vaginal Fistula, Anal sphincter repair
Possible risks during surgery
- Bleeding
- Damage to the bladder, ureters or rectum. Damage occurs in less than 1% of surgeries. If there is damage it will be repaired during surgery if possible.
- Infection
- Scar tissue- Dyspareunia: Discomfort during sexual activity
- Recurrence of prolapse
It is the least invasive surgery in gynaecology as it does not involve any incisions on the abdomen and all steps of the surgery is performed via vagina. Vaginal Hysterectomy approach is the first choice whenever hysterectomy is advised.
