Normally there is a thread at the end of the device for it to be easily pulled out when the time is over. However, in some patients this thread may break, or the thread make it curl up inside the uterus making it difficult to be removed in the outpatient department.
In situations like this we need to 1st do an ultrasound to locate the device inside the Uterus. Then Hysteroscopy is used as a visual guide to reach up to the IUCD, held by the hysteroscopic forceps and then retrieved.
This is a simple method to remove a lost or forgotten IUCD. There may be some spotting for few days after the removal. We generally taken endometrial biopsy also at this time to rule out any pathology in the endometrium
