Adhesiolysis

Adhesions are scar tissue that form between organs inside the abdomen.

Causes

Abdominal adhesions can form between organs within the abdomen like uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder, appendix, ureters, liver, kidneys, and spleen. The involvement of tubes and ovaries can lead to infertility as the adhesions compromises the ovum pickup or can cause tubal dysfunction (torsion or block). The incidence of post-operative adhesions are maximum after an open surgery and minimal after minimally invasive surgery like laparoscopic or robotic surgery.

 Laparoscopic or Robotic

Adhesiolysis removes or divide adhesions. This helps in restoring the normal anatomy and organ function as well as reduces pain and improves fertility. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis is the recommended method to treat intrabdominal adhesions. This can prevent development of further adhesions, hence open surgery should not be done to treat adhesions.
